Jackie Robinson
Jackie Robinson was a hardworking man and the youngest of five children.
He was born in Cairo Georgia in 1919 during a Spanish flu. His middle
Name was in honor of former president Theodore Roosevelt. His family
Were sharecroppers and after their father left them in 1920 they moved
To Pasadena California. Raised by a single mother, Jackie Robinson grew
Up in relative poverty and joined a local neighborhood gang. In 1935
He graduated from Dakota Junior High School and enrolled in John
Muir High School. There he played on various sport teams and they was:
Football, basketball, track, and baseball. In 1936 Jackie Robinson won
The junior boys singles championship in the annual Pacific Coast Negro
Tournament and the next year he played for the high school basketball team.
After leaving his high school, Robinson attended Pasadena Junior College
Where he continued to play sports. After leaving PJC in 1940 he transferred
To University of California, Los Angeles where he became the school’s first
Athlete to win letters in four sports. He was one of our four African American
Players on the 1939 UCLA Bruins football team. In 1946 Jackie Robinson
Came to Daytona Beach, Florida for spring training with the Montreal Royals.
He was banned from playing in Jacksonville and Sanford, but not in Daytona.
